Purpose:
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand the objectives and statutory requirements pertaining to health and safety in the workplace. The learners will be able to explain the rights, powers, functions and duties of the workplace health and safety representative and how any errant health, safety and environmental issues may be handled. Learners will also be able to participate in the safety, health and environmental structures and measure these activities according to health, safety and environmental requirements.

The course covers
Definitions and terminology contained in, as well as the objectives for the current legislation, are explained in terms of specified requirements of the workplace. The statutory requirements applicable to an employer, health and safety representative and committee and the effect on the duties and functions of each. The specified requirements for conducting safety, health and environmental representation activities at a working place, their importance and the implications of non-compliance. The specific rights of SHE Representatives. The importance and resolution of H&S issues. Gathering of facts and information. Comply with activities within the H&S structures, including those contained within the management systems of the organisation and the consequences to health, safety, environment and production
