Overview
Purpose:
Identify, monitor and implementing appropriate preventative measures for exposure to hazardous substances through knowledge of classification, physical states, health effects and disposal methods of hazardous substances in the workplace.
Content:
Specified requirements include legal and site-specific conditions and are contained in one or more of the following documents:
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA).
• Occupational Health and Safety Risk Management Programme.
• Relevant Acts: e.g. Mine Health & Safety Act, 1996 (Act no 29/1996), and
• Managerial Instructions.
• Minerals Act and Regulations, 1991 (Act no 50/1991). And Occupational Health and Safety (Act no85/1993).
• Mine Standard Procedures.
• List of Recorded OH&S Risks.
• Mandatory Codes of Practice
• Working Guides.
• SABS and other relevant Standards.
• Equipment and Materials Specifications
• Chief Inspector of Mines’ Directives.
Outcomes:
The qualifying learner is capable of:
- Monitoring, advising and reporting on the scope and understanding of the specified requirements as regards to hazardous substances in a workplace.
2. Demonstrating knowledge pertaining to the application of methods in preventing exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace.
3. Demonstrating knowledge pertaining to the classification, physical state, health effects and disposal methods of hazardous substances in a workplace.
